Quite a few of the popular stalls at Hong Lim Market & Food Centre have long lines from before lunchtime, then longer lines all through lunchtime, then even lines after lunchtime! If you want the taste but not the wait, what’s to be done?
One such stall, with a name about as long as the lines in front of it at lunchtime is Ah Heng Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee.
The way to beat the lunch crowd here is to eat here for dinner, of course.
The stall is open all the way to 9pm, seven days a week, so one evening I dropped by at 6pm, and voila – no queue!
I was hungry (or perhaps just greedy) and had the large $6.50 bowl. Full of ingredients. There was lots of boiled chicken, which was pulled apart for easy eating. The mandatory potato chunks for Singapore-style curry was also present – boiled just right, and neither mushy nor under-cooked crunchy.
Generous servings of tau pok and fish cake rounded out the dish, together with the boiled yellow noodles (sou mian; round wheat noodles) which I selected from the choice of noodles, which included bee hoon (thin rice vermicelli) and chor bee hoon (thick rice vermicelli).
Everything went together wonderfully, and that makes me wonder why there aren’t curry chicken mee stalls in every hawker centre.
While I enjoyed the meal, I did feel that the curry wasn’t as thick and rich as I like. But then, my comparison with my mother-in-law’s chicken curry was probably unfair.
Overall, worth a try – very much comfort food for those of us who’ve grown up eating chicken curry and noodles, though not always together. Even worth queuing for at lunchtime.
